September is a busy month here. The anchor weekend is Saturday, September 12, when Septemberfest lands downtown while Grey Towers hosts its walking and tasting tour. Late in the month, the Festival of Wood marks National Public Lands Day on a day full of woodworking, music, and river-valley color. In between there are free outdoor concerts, a three-day book festival, classic films, and the last full Sundays of the farmers market.

A long holiday weekend of nature programming at PEEC, the National Park Service's education partner in the Delaware Water Gap: interpretive hikes, animal presentations, canoeing, and campfire evenings, with lodging and meals included. Registration is required and rates are on the PEEC site. It is the last big camp-style weekend before the center shifts to autumn programming.

The free three-day book festival is back with a new format. Friday writer's workshops run at the Milford Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday's ticketed Main Stage brings "From Tennis Pro to The Daily Show" with Emmy-winning host Michael Kosta to the Milford Theater, while free author sessions run at Grey Towers 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m., with a lineup of best-selling authors and a Survivor alum in the mix. The signature event of the month and the region's National Public Lands Day celebration, timed to the Pinchot estate and its forestry legacy. Expect woodworking demonstrations and artisans, bee and plant vendors, conservation exhibits, children's activities in the Pool Terrace, appearances by Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl, and a free open house of the mansion's first floor museum. Grounds admission is free; a donation to the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Pike County is suggested. It runs rain or shine.

Getting out while the leaves turn
September is when the Delaware Valley starts to color up. The waterfall trails and overlooks near Milford are popular right now. Raymondskill Falls, the tallest waterfall in Pennsylvania at about 105 feet, runs hard after late-summer rain, and the boardwalk paths at Dingmans Falls are an easy walk.
The National Park Service stations ranger-led Waterfalls Walks at the Dingmans Falls Visitor Center on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through the season, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., in the Dingmans Ferry area of the park. PEEC keeps its weekend schedule lively with the Pond Explorers netting session on Saturday, September 12 (10 a.m. to noon, $5 per person), owl evenings, and the EcoZone Discovery Room on weekend afternoons. Register on the PEEC site.
The Festival of Wood on September 26 doubles as National Public Lands Day, so the property's volunteer projects open up at the estate along with the festival itself.
